Where it came from
Myths and Myth-Makers was first published in 1872, representing an early and influential effort by American philosopher and historian John Fiske to apply the principles of comparative mythology and evolutionary theory to folklore. Writing during a period of intense intellectual curiosity regarding the common roots of human culture, Fiske aimed to dismantle the idea that myths were merely whimsical inventions, instead positioning them as the essential, foundational literature of nascent human consciousness.
The work is noted for its accessible prose and its synthesis of contemporary scholarship from figures like Max Müller and Edward Burnett Tylor. While modern folklorists have moved beyond some of Fiske’s specific evolutionary frameworks, the book remains a significant artifact of 19th-century intellectual history, illustrating the transition of mythological study from theological curiosity to a disciplined component of the social sciences.
