Where it came from
Nakitai Watashi wa Neko o Kaburu, known internationally as A Whisker Away, originated as an original anime film produced by Studio Colorido. To accompany the film's 2020 release, a manga adaptation was serialized in Monthly Comic Alive, illustrated by Kuromaru Kyousuke. The manga serves as a faithful visual companion to the film's narrative, which follows a middle school girl named Miyo who magically transforms into a cat to gain the attention of her crush.
The character designs and setting were crafted to evoke a nostalgic, sun-drenched aesthetic of rural Japan, blending magical realism with the internal emotional struggles of adolescence. Kuromaru Kyousuke’s adaptation was noted for effectively translating the fluid, expressive animation style of the film into a static medium, emphasizing the contrast between Miyo’s human anxieties and her feline autonomy.
