Where it came from
Napping Princess: The Story of the Unknown Me, known in Japan as Hirune Hime, was written and directed by Kenji Kamiyama and released as an animated feature film in 2017. Produced by Signal.MD, the project was Kamiyama's attempt to craft a personal story that bridged the gap between his long-standing interest in technology-driven science fiction and the grounded, emotional reality of a father-daughter relationship. The narrative centers on Kokone Morikawa, a high school student who drifts between her waking life in Okayama and a recurring dream world that reveals truths about her family's history.
The character designs were handled by Atsuko Ishizuka and Shigeto Koyama, who aimed for a distinct aesthetic that balanced the whimsical nature of Kokone's dreams with the industrial backdrop of the real-world automotive industry. Upon its release, the film was noted for its ambitious blend of fantasy and family drama, receiving praise for its visual creativity and the unconventional way it explored themes of memory and technological legacy. It has since been adapted into various print media and companion volumes, serving as a significant entry in Kamiyama's directorial filmography.
