Narutaru

Narutaru, also known as Shadow Star, was created by mangaka Mohiro Kitoh and serialized in the seinen magazine Afternoon between 1998 and 2003. The story begins as a deceptively lighthearted narrative involving a young girl who discovers a mysterious, dragon-like creature, but it quickly pivots into a dark, psychological deconstruction of childhood innocence, alienation, and trauma. It emerged during a period in late 90s manga where creators were increasingly pushing the boundaries of the dark fantasy and psychological thriller genres, utilizing the contrast between whimsical creature designs and brutal, realistic violence to unsettle its audience.

Kitoh is known for his clinical, minimalist art style, which serves to heighten the jarring impact of the series' more visceral moments. In designing the dragon-like entities, known as 'dragons' or 'children of the shadow,' he opted for organic, often unsettlingly fragile forms that stand in stark contrast to the genre conventions of powerful, heroic monsters. The series received significant attention upon its release for its unflinching exploration of dark themes, often challenging readers who were drawn in by the seemingly benign character designs only to find a narrative focused on the complexities of human morality and the consequences of societal indifference.
