Where it came from
Nekura Kishi ni Yoru Dekiai Mankitsu-chuu no Busa Neko, Jitsu wa Seijo desu! originated as a light novel series before being adapted into a manga, authored by Kanon and featuring character designs typical of the 'isekai' subgenre. The narrative centers on a protagonist reincarnated as an unattractive cat who finds themselves under the doting care of a gloomy knight, eventually revealing their secret identity as a saint. This work emerged within the competitive landscape of Japanese web-novel publishing platforms, where stories featuring transformation, hidden identities, and romantic fantasy tropes are consistently popular.
The character design and visual tone, handled by Kanon, focus on the contrast between the unappealing physical form of the feline protagonist and the idealized, melancholic demeanor of the knight. The series follows a well-established trend in contemporary manga where creators blend humor with high-stakes fantasy world-building. Upon its release, it garnered a dedicated following among fans of light-hearted shoujo-adjacent fantasy, finding success primarily through its ability to subvert common tropes while maintaining the emotional core expected of its genre.
