Where it came from
The Netherworld Exchange Group is a niche, experimental manga project created by the artist known as 21st Century Meow. Emerging from the independent underground comics scene, the series functions as an episodic anthology that blends surrealist dark fantasy with bureaucratic satire. The work reflects a growing trend in indie manga where creators leverage digital platforms to experiment with non-linear storytelling and stark, minimalist aesthetics that deviate from mainstream commercial styles.
The design and artistic direction of the series are characterized by high-contrast ink work and a detached, clinical narrative voice. 21st Century Meow utilizes this aesthetic to emphasize the series' themes regarding the absurdity of institutional systems within supernatural settings. Since its release, it has garnered a dedicated following among enthusiasts of avant-garde literature and alternative comics, praised primarily for its uncompromising vision and the distinct, haunting atmosphere maintained throughout its volumes.
