Netsuzou: Chijin no Ai

Netsuzou: Chijin no Ai represents a modern manga adaptation of Junichiro Tanizaki’s seminal 1924 novel, Chijin no Ai, or Naomi. Originally a landmark of Taisho-era literature, the story explores the complex, often obsessive power dynamics between a naive salaryman and a young woman he attempts to mold into his ideal partner. The manga adaptation preserves the psychological intensity of the source material while translating its themes of obsession and westernization into the visual language of contemporary manga, reflecting the enduring fascination with Tanizaki’s critique of societal norms and human desire.

The adaptation focuses on the stark aesthetic contrast inherent in the original text, balancing the protagonist's delusions of grandeur against the cold reality of his manipulation. By utilizing the medium of manga, the creators intended to strip away the historical artifice of the 1920s to reveal the core of Tanizaki’s exploration of masculine ego and female agency. The work has been received as both a challenging piece of psychological drama and a tribute to the literary legacy of one of Japan’s most influential twentieth-century authors, consistently sparking discourse regarding the morality of its central characters.
