Ningen Shikkaku

Ningen Shikkaku, or No Longer Human, was published in 1948 shortly after the suicide of its author, Osamu Dazai. Often regarded as his masterpiece, the novel is a semi-autobiographical account that chronicles the life of Oba Yozo, a man deeply alienated from society and incapable of understanding human beings. It stands as a seminal work of post-war Japanese literature, reflecting the profound disillusionment and existential despair prevalent in Japan following the Second World War.

The work was serialized in Shukan Kōron and is notable for its raw, unflinching examination of shame and isolation. Dazai's writing style is characterized by a stark, confessional tone that stripped away the artifice of traditional literary forms. While some contemporary critics were initially unsettled by the book's nihilistic perspective, it has since become one of the most widely read novels in Japan, frequently cited as a definitive exploration of the human condition and the fragility of the self.
