Nisekoi

Nisekoi, meaning false love, was created by mangaka Naoshi Komi and serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2011 to 2016. The series emerged during a period when the romantic comedy genre was a staple of the magazine, blending traditional harem tropes with a polished, vibrant art style. Komi’s narrative follows Raku Ichijo, the heir to a yakuza family, who is forced into a fake relationship with rival gang leader Chitoge Kirisaki to maintain peace, a premise that allowed for a playful exploration of misunderstandings and shifting romantic allegiances.

The design of the series is characterized by Komi’s expressive character work and penchant for highly detailed, clean linework that emphasizes emotional beats through visual comedy and dramatic shifts in tone. Upon its release, the manga was well-received by readers for its comedic timing and distinct visual identity, eventually spawning a popular anime adaptation by studio Shaft. It remains a hallmark of 2010s rom-com manga, noted for its ability to balance lighthearted slapstick with the earnest, slow-burn development of its central cast.
