Where it came from
No Longer Male, or 'Otokonoko,' is a manga work by the celebrated artist Yumiko Ooshima, a central figure in the Year 24 Group. This group of female mangaka redefined the shōjo genre in the 1970s by introducing complex psychological themes and breaking away from the traditional narrative structures of the time. Ooshima is particularly noted for her ethereal artistic style and her ability to blend whimsy with melancholic, philosophical explorations of gender and identity.
This specific work reflects Ooshima's interest in the fluidity of human expression and the social constructs surrounding masculinity and femininity. In the context of her broader bibliography, which includes influential titles like The Star of Cottonland, this piece serves as a compact study of character depth. It was well-received by contemporary critics and her dedicated fanbase for its nuanced storytelling and its contribution to the subversion of gender tropes within Japanese comics during the late 20th century.
