Where it came from
O/A is a manga series created by Watarai Keiji, originally serialized in the late 1990s within the pages of Monthly Shonen Jump. The series emerged during a period when the magazine was actively seeking unique, high-concept narratives to diversify its offerings. It is a work of science fiction that centers on the concept of 'O/A' units—androids designed to integrate into human society, exploring the philosophical boundaries between artificial intelligence and human emotion.
Watarai Keiji’s artistic approach for O/A is characterized by a clean, sharp aesthetic that favors mechanical precision in his character designs, reflecting the techno-centric themes of the plot. The manga was received as a niche but conceptually ambitious entry in the sci-fi genre, noted for its thoughtful pacing and its exploration of identity. While it remains a cult title, it serves as a distinct example of the era's focus on the intersection of speculative technology and interpersonal development.
