Where it came from
Okojo-san, a comedy manga series by Ayumi Uno, debuted in the monthly shojo magazine LaLa in 1996. The series centers on the humorous and often surreal antics of a stoat, the titular Okojo-san, who lives in a pet shop before finding himself in various social settings. Uno created the character with a distinctive, slightly cynical personality that contrasted sharply with its cute, rounded aesthetic, providing a dry wit that appealed to both children and adults.
The design of the character was instrumental to the manga's success, blending traditional Japanese 'kawaii' sensibilities with a mischievous, expressive face that allowed for a wide range of comedic reactions. The series was well-received upon its release, leading to a television anime adaptation in 2002 by studio Hal Film Maker. The work remains a recognizable example of early 2000s gag manga, noted for its balance of slapstick humor and the idiosyncratic charm of its protagonist.
