Old Master Q

Old Master Q, or Lao Fu Zi, first appeared in Hong Kong newspapers in 1962, created by the artist Alfonso Wong under the pen name Wong Chak. The comic was born out of the social and economic turbulence of 1960s Hong Kong, using a silent, slapstick, and observational humor style that transcended linguistic barriers. By focusing on the daily struggles and eccentricities of the titular character and his friends, the series became a cornerstone of Cantonese pop culture and a reflection of the common person's experience during a period of rapid urban transformation.

The character design is defined by his signature traditional Chinese long gown and skullcap, a visual choice that Wong used to contrast the character against the increasingly Westernized aesthetic of the city. Alfonso Wong’s style was heavily influenced by mid-century international gag cartoons, prioritizing concise visual storytelling over dialogue. The series was exceptionally well-received across generations, evolving from serial newspaper strips into widely collected graphic volumes that remain integral to the cultural heritage of the Chinese diaspora.
