Once Upon a Small Town

Once Upon a Small Town, originally titled 'Accidental Country Diary' in its webtoon format by Park Ha-Min, emerged from the popular digital manhwa landscape in South Korea. The story was serialized on platforms like KakaoPage, capturing readers with its gentle, healing narrative centered on the fish-out-of-water experiences of a veterinarian forced to navigate rural life. The work represents a specific trend in contemporary Korean storytelling that emphasizes 'healing' or 'so-so' (small but certain) happiness, moving away from high-stakes drama to focus on interpersonal connections and the charm of a provincial setting.

Park Ha-Min crafted the series with a focus on character-driven comedy and subtle romantic development, utilizing a bright, expressive art style that emphasizes the idyllic and often humorous realities of living in the countryside. The webtoon's successful reception led to its adaptation into a physical book format, allowing fans to collect the narrative in a tangible, printed volume. Its design and publication were intended to appeal to a broad audience looking for lighthearted escapism, and the story eventually gained further international recognition through its live-action television adaptation.
