Where it came from
One Day Overlord is a spin-off manga series by Kobori Yo that serves as a comedic companion to the popular light novel and anime franchise Overlord by Kugane Maruyama. First serialized in the monthly magazine Monthly Comp Ace in 2016, the work was created to offer a lighter, slice-of-life perspective on the otherwise dark and grandiose world of Nazarick. It focuses primarily on the daily activities and misunderstandings of the characters, leaning heavily into parody and slapstick humor to contrast with the high-stakes narrative of the main series.
The design of the series reflects a shift in tone, characterized by simplified character models and a lighthearted art style that prioritizes comedic timing over the intricate detail found in the main source material. Kobori Yo utilized this creative freedom to explore the mundane interpersonal dynamics of the Overlord cast, which resonated well with the fanbase as a refreshing departure from the intense political and magical conflicts of the canon. It was received as a well-regarded supplementary text that successfully humanizes, albeit in a humorous fashion, the series' more villainous archetypes.
