Where it came from
ONI: Road to be the Mightiest Oni Episode ZERO was produced as a promotional tie-in manga accompanying the release of the video game ONI: Road to be the Mightiest Oni. Developed by Kenichi Kanzaki and his studio, the project draws heavily from Japanese folklore, specifically the legend of Momotaro, by flipping the narrative perspective to focus on a demon protagonist named Kuuta.
The manga serves as a visual bridge for the game's aesthetic, which utilizes a distinctive, stylized 3D cel-shaded look. Takahashi Hideki illustrated the volume to establish the emotional stakes of Kuuta's journey, emphasizing themes of perseverance and identity. It was released to provide players with deeper narrative context for the character's motivations before they engaged with the primary gameplay experience.
