Where it came from
Onryou Biyori, created by mangaka Imai Haruka, emerged within the landscape of contemporary Japanese horror manga. Published as a collection of short-form narratives, the work draws heavily on the tradition of the yurei—the vengeful spirits of Japanese folklore—reimagining these classic tropes for a modern audience that favors psychological unease over overt gore.
The design and artistic direction of the volume reflect Imai Haruka's signature minimalist approach to horror. By focusing on atmospheric tension and the uncanny stillness of daily life, the illustration style aims to unsettle the reader through subtle visual cues and lingering shadows. Upon its release, the volume was recognized for its ability to distill complex, folkloric dread into concise, episodic storytelling.
