Where it came from
Orient was launched in 2018 by Shinobu Ohtaka, the creator best known for the internationally successful series Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic. Published initially in Weekly Shonen Magazine, the series represents a stylistic pivot for Ohtaka, moving away from high-fantasy Arabian Nights themes toward a historical fantasy setting inspired by the Sengoku period of Japan. The narrative follows young protagonists Musashi and Kojiro in an alternate reality where demon overlords rule the land, forcing humanity to operate as miners to survive.
The series was designed to showcase Ohtaka's signature dynamic action sequences and complex world-building. While early chapters were celebrated for their fast-paced combat and character design, the series faced scrutiny regarding its pacing and tone shifts following its transition to the monthly Bessatsu Shonen Magazine. Despite these shifts, it remains a notable entry in the shonen fantasy genre, appreciated by fans for its intricate magic system and persistent themes of camaraderie and historical reclamation.
