Where it came from
Orpheus no Mado, or The Window of Orpheus, was serialized by Ikeda Riyoko between 1975 and 1981, following the immense cultural impact of her earlier masterpiece, The Rose of Versailles. Set against the backdrop of early 20th-century Europe, the epic narrative centers on the prestigious Regensburg Music Academy in Germany, weaving together the lives of three young people caught in the political upheavals leading up to the Russian Revolution.
Ikeda utilized a sophisticated blend of historical drama and tragic romance, employing her characteristic intricate line work and operatic pacing to explore themes of fate, art, and identity. The work was widely praised for its ambitious scope and meticulous research into the era's social tensions, cementing Ikeda's reputation as a pivotal figure in the development of modern shōjo manga and its ability to engage with complex, mature subject matter.
