Where it came from
Osusume Boyfriend was serialized in the monthly shojo manga magazine Bessatsu Margaret, beginning in the late 1980s. Created by Ikuemi Ryou, a central figure in the josei and shojo manga landscape, the work emerged during a period when the genre was shifting toward more grounded, introspective portrayals of adolescence. The narrative focuses on the intricacies of romantic attachments and the subtle, often painful, navigation of social dynamics among teenagers.
Ryou is widely recognized for her minimalist aesthetic and her ability to capture the nuance of internal monologues. In this volume, she utilizes clean lines and sparse backgrounds to shift the reader's attention entirely to the characters' expressions and shifting emotional states. The work was well-received for its departure from more stylized shojo tropes, helping to solidify Ryou's reputation for creating realistic, atmospheric stories that resonate with the quiet complexities of youth.
