Where it came from
Otouto no Otto, or 'My Brother's Husband,' was serialized in the magazine Monthly Action between 2014 and 2017. Created by Gengoroh Tagame, the manga marked a notable departure from the artist's previous work in the erotic genre, focusing instead on a grounded, heartwarming exploration of grief, family dynamics, and LGBTQ+ acceptance in contemporary Japanese society.
The narrative follows a widowed father in suburban Japan whose life is changed when the Canadian widower of his estranged, deceased twin brother arrives to visit. Tagame’s illustrative style, while retaining his signature detailed character work, was lauded for its sensitivity and restraint. The series received significant international acclaim, winning the Excellence Award at the 19th Japan Media Arts Festival and the Will Eisner Comic Industry Award for Best International Edition in 2018.
