Palgrave's Dictionary of Political Economy

First published between 1894 and 1899, Palgrave's Dictionary of Political Economy was commissioned to provide a comprehensive academic resource for the rapidly evolving field of economics. Edited by Sir Robert Harry Inglis Palgrave, a banker and economist, the project sought to bridge the gap between abstract classical theory and the practical, modern applications of the late Victorian era. It was intended to serve as a definitive reference work that would stabilize the discourse around economic terminology for scholars, students, and policymakers.

The dictionary was meticulously curated to reflect the international scope of economic thought, drawing upon a vast array of contributors including leading historians, statisticians, and economic theorists of the time. Palgrave’s design prioritized clarity and exhaustive cross-referencing, aiming to move beyond simple definitions to offer brief essays on the history, logic, and significance of economic concepts. Upon its release, it was lauded by the academic community for its rigor, eventually establishing itself as a foundational cornerstone in the canon of reference literature for political economy.
