Where it came from
Pat-Ken is a series created by the artist Katakura Masanori, appearing in the late 1980s. Emerging during a period of experimentation within the Japanese alternative manga scene, the work reflects a distinctively surreal and often gritty aesthetic. Katakura was known for a style that balanced unconventional humor with dark, visceral imagery, placing the series within the experimental landscape of the time.
The design and narrative approach of Pat-Ken emphasize a minimalist, rough-hewn visual language that deviates from mainstream manga conventions. The series was produced during a time when underground artists were pushing the boundaries of medium-specific storytelling, focusing on character-driven absurdism rather than traditional long-form plot arcs. It remains a cult curiosity recognized primarily for its uncompromising stylistic signature.
