Where it came from
Persona 5, illustrated by Murasaki Hisato, is a manga adaptation serialized in Ura Sunday beginning in 2016. The work was commissioned to coincide with the global release of the critically acclaimed role-playing game developed by Atlus, serving as a companion piece that retells the protagonist's journey as he balances high school life with his secret activities as a Phantom Thief. The adaptation seeks to translate the game's distinct aesthetic, characterized by its vibrant color palette and stylized UI, into the static panels of a serialized comic format.
The character designs and visual approach by Hisato aim to capture the kinetic energy of the source material's turn-based combat and social simulation elements. While adapting a long-form narrative game into a manga format presents significant pacing challenges, the work is noted for its faithful rendering of the core narrative beats. It was received by fans primarily as an archival extension of the Persona franchise, providing a different perspective on the narrative arc that concluded the modern trilogy of the series.
