Peter and Wendy: New Illustrated with Classic Illustrations

Peter and Wendy, J.M. Barrie's definitive prose adaptation of his iconic stage play, was first published in 1911. The work emerged from the cultural obsession with the Edwardian 'boy who would not grow up,' expanding on the earlier short stories and the theatrical sensation of 1904. It serves as the primary literary record of the Peter Pan mythos, blending whimsical Victorian fantasy with underlying themes of maternal loss and the inevitable transition from childhood to adulthood.

This particular edition is a contemporary reissue that aims to preserve the aesthetic sensibilities of the original publication by pairing Barrie's foundational text with historic illustrations. By utilizing classic plates, publishers seek to maintain the quintessential visual identity of the story, which has been shaped over a century by various artists. Such editions are intended for readers who value the traditional, nostalgic atmosphere associated with early twentieth-century children's literature, prioritizing the enduring, melancholy charm of the original prose.
