Physiological Psychology

First published in 1943, Clifford T. Morgan’s Physiological Psychology served as a seminal textbook that bridged the gap between behavioral psychology and the biological sciences. During a period when experimental psychology was rapidly shifting toward a more rigorous, empirical framework, Morgan sought to synthesize neuroanatomy and physiology into a cohesive structure that psychologists could use to understand the physical substrates of behavior. The text was widely credited with formalizing the field of biopsychology as a distinct academic discipline.

Morgan’s design for the volume prioritized clarity and pedagogical structure, organizing complex physiological mechanisms into thematic sections that appealed to both undergraduate students and established researchers. The work was highly regarded for its objective tone and comprehensive illustrations, which demystified intricate nervous system functions. Due to its success, the book saw multiple editions throughout the mid-20th century, cementing its place as a foundational reference for generations of psychology students.
