Pierre Puvis de Chavannes: A catalogue raisonné of the painted work

This catalogue raisonné, authored by Aimée Brown Price and published by Yale University Press in 2010, serves as the definitive scholarly record of the painted oeuvre of Pierre Puvis de Chavannes. Commissioned to synthesize decades of research, the multi-volume set was created to address the long-standing need for a comprehensive, critical examination of the artist's legacy, which had previously been fragmented across various smaller studies and exhibition catalogues.

Aimée Brown Price, a preeminent authority on Puvis de Chavannes, spent years meticulously documenting, authenticating, and contextualizing the artist's murals and easel paintings. Her design for the catalogue emphasizes accessibility to provenance records and thematic classification, aiming to restore the reputation of a pivotal nineteenth-century French symbolist. The work was received with significant acclaim by the art historical community, earning praise for its analytical rigor and for finally providing a reliable foundation for future scholarship on the artist's influence on modernism.
