Ponkotsu Ponko

Ponkotsu Ponko was created by mangaka Yatera Keita and serialized in Big Comic Spirits beginning in 2019. The series centers on a domestic robot named Ponko, who is sent to care for an elderly widower in a near-future rural setting. The narrative explores themes of loneliness, the complexities of human-robot relationships, and the inevitable shift toward modernization in aging communities, grounded in a gentle, slice-of-life aesthetic that balances humor with melancholic undertones.

The character design for Ponko highlights a deliberate contrast between her advanced, albeit glitchy, technological nature and the quaint, traditional environment of her surroundings. Yatera Keita utilizes a clean, expressive art style that emphasizes the emotional development of the central pair, aiming to evoke empathy for a machine navigating the nuances of human connection. The work was generally well-received for its sincere approach to its premise and its quiet, thoughtful progression throughout the volume releases.
