Popular Commentary of the Bible: The New Testament

The Popular Commentary of the Bible: The New Testament, authored by Paul Edward Kretzmann and published by Concordia Publishing House in the early 1920s, emerged from a desire to provide accessible, scholarly theological guidance for laypeople within the Lutheran tradition. Kretzmann, a prominent theologian of the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod, sought to bridge the gap between complex academic exegesis and the practical devotional needs of the average church member, resulting in a work that balances doctrinal rigor with clear, instructional prose.

The design of the volumes reflects the aesthetic of early 20th-century religious reference materials, characterized by a structured, didactic layout intended for long-term study and reference. Kretzmann’s work was notably well-received within its denomination, quickly becoming a staple in many parsonages and homes. It is regarded as a significant artifact of mid-western American Lutheran intellectual history, maintaining relevance for scholars and adherents due to its consistent adherence to confessional theological frameworks.
