Princess Maleine, tr. by R. Hovey

Princess Maleine was the debut play by Belgian symbolist Maurice Maeterlinck, originally published in French in 1889. The work was famously hailed by Octave Mirbeau as a masterpiece comparable to Shakespeare, propelling Maeterlinck to international literary prominence. This specific volume is the English translation by American poet Richard Hovey, published in the 1890s as part of an effort to introduce Symbolist drama to English-speaking audiences.

The translation reflects the fin de siècle movement's fascination with dreamlike atmospheres, silence, and the inevitability of fate. Hovey’s rendering sought to preserve the poetic, haunting quality of Maeterlinck’s prose, which favored mood and suggestion over traditional plot development. The volume stands as a significant artifact of the era’s literary exchange between Europe and the United States, illustrating the profound influence Maeterlinck’s 'theatre of the soul' held over the turn-of-the-century avant-garde.
