Where it came from
Puzzle & Dragons X, authored by Momota Inoue, is a manga series derived from the popular Puzzle & Dragons role-playing video game franchise developed by GungHo Online Entertainment. The manga was serialized in Shogakukan's Monthly CoroCoro Comic starting in 2016, serving as a tie-in to the release of the Nintendo 3DS titles Puzzle & Dragons X: Kami no Shou and Ryuu no Shou. It was designed to broaden the appeal of the video game franchise to a younger demographic, translating the complex mechanics of the digital game into a traditional shonen narrative.
The narrative follows the protagonist, Ace, as he explores the world of Dragoza, engaging in monster-battling duels that mirror the match-three puzzle gameplay of the source material. Inoue Momota was tasked with adapting the high-energy aesthetic of the game into a fast-paced manga format, focusing on character-driven battles and the collection of diverse creatures. The series was generally received as a standard promotional manga, valued primarily by fans of the video game who appreciated the expanded lore and visual characterization of the in-game monsters.
