Where it came from
Qī Lóngzhū GT, often referred to in the West as Dragon Ball GT, represents a unique chapter in the franchise's history as the first anime-original sequel series. Produced by Toei Animation and airing between 1996 and 1997, it was created to continue the adventures of Son Goku following the conclusion of the Dragon Ball Z manga. Unlike its predecessors, this series did not have a direct source material written by Akira Toriyama, though he provided character designs and conceptual oversight for the project.
The series is noted for its shift in tone, blending the adventurous spirit of the original Dragon Ball with the high-stakes combat of Z. While the production aimed to expand the franchise's universe, the reception at the time of its release was polarized among fans due to the divergence from established source material. Over the years, it has gained a distinct identity as a nostalgic cult classic, often scrutinized for its experimental storytelling while being appreciated for its iconic transformations and character evolutions.
