Where it came from
Quagmire, also known as Dobudame, is an experimental manga work by Murano Moribi that emerged from the independent, alternative circles of the Japanese underground comics scene. The work is characterized by its unsettling, surrealist imagery and a minimalist narrative approach that challenges traditional manga pacing, reflecting a broader movement in the late 20th and early 21st centuries to push the medium toward abstract expressionism.
Murano Moribi’s design philosophy for the series centers on the visceral representation of psychological stagnation and environmental decay. By utilizing stark linework and heavy negative space, the author sought to evoke a sense of entrapment, a hallmark of the 'dobudame' or 'quagmire' motif. While niche, the series is recognized by scholars of avant-garde manga for its uncompromising stylistic consistency and its rejection of mainstream narrative tropes in favor of atmosphere.
