Where it came from
Rack: 13-kei no Zankoku Kikai, written and illustrated by Ibaraki Baitou, began its serialization in Square Enix's Monthly Shonen Gangan in 2012. The series emerged during a period of rising interest in dark, psychological fantasy manga, blending elements of gothic horror with procedural detective narratives. It follows the story of a man who possesses a mysterious box capable of granting wishes at a terrible cost, exploring themes of morality, obsession, and the inevitable consequences of greed.
The visual style of the manga is characterized by intricate, often unsettling character designs and a heavy use of shadow to cultivate an atmosphere of impending dread. Ibaraki Baitou’s approach to the subject matter aimed to challenge the reader's empathy, placing protagonists in impossible situations that test their humanity. While it occupies a niche space within the broader seinen and shonen demographics, the series is recognized for its consistency in tone and its commitment to a grim, uncompromising narrative trajectory throughout its run.
