Where it came from
RAINBOW: Nisha Rokubō no Shichinin, known in English as Rainbow: The Seven from Block 2, Cell 6, is a manga series written by George Abe and illustrated by Masasumi Kakizaki. Serialized in Weekly Young Sunday starting in 2002, the narrative centers on seven teenagers who meet in a reformatory in 1955 and struggle through the brutal conditions of post-war Japan. The work is widely regarded for its unflinching portrayal of trauma, camaraderie, and the pursuit of survival amidst systemic cruelty.
Masasumi Kakizaki’s dark, highly detailed artistic style was instrumental in establishing the series' grim atmosphere, effectively capturing the emotional weight of Abe’s storytelling. The manga received critical acclaim for its narrative intensity, eventually winning the 51st Shogakukan Manga Award in the Seinen category. It remains a notable example of the grit and psychological depth found in early 2000s seinen manga, praised for its character development and historical framing.
