Where it came from
Raise wa Tanin ga Ii, authored by Asuka Konishi, began its serialization in Kodansha's Monthly Afternoon magazine in 2017. The series emerged as a prominent entry in the seinen manga genre, specifically noted for its departure from traditional romantic tropes by exploring the volatile and unconventional relationship between the descendants of rival yakuza clans, Yoshino Somei and Kirishima Miyama. The narrative balances dark comedy with psychological tension, grounding its stylized character dynamics in an atmosphere of organized crime and complex morality.
Asuka Konishi is recognized for a distinct visual style that emphasizes sharp character designs and expressive, often unsettling, emotional shifts. The series has received significant critical attention for its subversion of the josei and seinen romance formulas, leading to its nomination for the 42nd Kodansha Manga Award and a win in the Tsugini Kuru Manga Awards. Its design philosophy centers on the contrast between the aesthetic appeal of the protagonists and the underlying menace of their respective backgrounds, a balance that has contributed to its sustained popularity and upcoming anime adaptation.
