Where it came from
Remember is a standalone art book by the acclaimed Chinese illustrator and comic artist Benjamin. Released in the mid-2000s, the collection serves as a visual anthology of his distinctive work, which is characterized by vibrant, saturated color palettes and a raw, emotive approach to digital painting. It emerged during a period when Benjamin was gaining significant international recognition for bridging the gap between traditional fine art aesthetics and the stylistic sensibilities of contemporary manga.
The book functions as a showcase of Benjamin’s thematic focus on the urban youth experience, loneliness, and romantic yearning in modern China. By utilizing bold, expressive brushwork that often feels spontaneous rather than clinical, Benjamin sought to capture the psychological intensity of his subjects. Upon its release, the volume was well-received by critics and readers alike for its departure from the rigid lines of traditional comics, establishing Benjamin as a singular voice in the global graphic arts community.
