Renai Sousa x Nekobon.

Renai Sousa x Nekobon is a collaborative manga project created by Hasukawa Ai, which emerged from the niche intersection of romance-themed doujinshi culture and stylized character-driven illustration. The work reflects the trend of experimental short-form storytelling common in the mid-to-late 2010s, where artists sought to blend emotional narrative arcs with distinct, cat-centric thematic elements. It was crafted to appeal to a demographic interested in subverting conventional romantic tropes through lighthearted, whimsical motifs.

Hasukawa Ai’s design approach for this series emphasizes soft, expressive line work and a deliberate use of whitespace to heighten the intimacy of the character interactions. Within the broader context of the Nekobon series, the collaboration was well-received among collectors for its cohesive aesthetic and the unique thematic consistency maintained across the volume. The work serves as a prime example of the artist’s contribution to self-published Japanese media, capturing a specific moment in the evolution of independent manga design.
