Reports Made to the ... General Assembly of the State of Illinois

The Reports Made to the General Assembly of the State of Illinois were published throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries to provide official transparency regarding the operations of state government agencies. These volumes served as the primary repository for biennial reports submitted by state officers, commissions, and charitable institutions, ensuring that the legislative body and the public remained informed of fiscal expenditures and administrative developments during a period of rapid westward expansion and institutional growth.

The design of these volumes is rooted in the functional, utilitarian aesthetic of 19th-century public printing. They were typically produced by state-contracted printers using sturdy, sober binding styles intended to survive frequent use in library archives and legislative offices. While they lack the artistic flourish of private press work, the clarity and comprehensive nature of their typography reflect the rigorous standards of state records, which were prioritized for their evidentiary value and historical permanence.
