Where it came from
Revolutionary Girl Utena originated in 1997 as a cross-media project developed by the creative collective Be-Papas, a group comprised of director Kunihiko Ikuhara, manga artist Chiho Saito, and other key creative staff. The project was conceived to deconstruct the tropes of the shojo manga genre, specifically the fairy tale archetype of the prince rescuing the princess, by placing Utena Tenjo in a surreal, allegorical environment where she assumes the role of the prince herself.
The narrative follows Utena’s journey through the Ohtori Academy, characterized by its intense symbolic visual language, rotating stage sets, and shadow plays. Chiho Saito’s manga adaptation was serialized alongside the anime production, offering a complementary aesthetic that emphasizes the series' exploration of gender roles, identity, and the subversion of traditional romance. Upon release, it was lauded by critics for its ambitious avant-garde style and remains a seminal work in the magical girl and deconstructionist genres.
