Riki-Oh, written by Masahiko Takajou and illustrated by Tetsuya Saruwatari, first emerged in the late 1980s within the pages of Shueisha's Business Jump. The series serves as a quintessential example of late-Showa era gekiga, a style of manga characterized by its gritty, dark realism and uncompromising approach to violence. It was conceived as an hyper-masculine morality play, centering on Riki-Oh Saiga, a protagonist with superhuman strength who navigates the brutal and corrupt environment of a privately run prison system.

The aesthetic of the series is defined by Saruwatari's visceral illustration style, which prioritizes raw impact and exaggerated anatomical brutality over traditional beauty.
