Where it came from
Robot × Laserbeam was created by Tadatoshi Fujimaki and serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump beginning in 2017. Following the massive success of his previous sports manga, Kuroko's Basketball, Fujimaki shifted his focus to golf, aiming to explore the sport through the lens of a protagonist with a cold, analytical, and robotic approach to physical movement. The series highlights the contrast between the rigid, precise calculations of the protagonist, Robby, and the dynamic, emotional nature of professional golf.
The narrative design emphasizes the technical aspects of golf swings and the physics of the game, mirroring the creator's penchant for high-stakes, hyper-competitive sports storytelling. While it debuted with significant attention due to Fujimaki's reputation, the series concluded its run in 2018. It is often regarded by manga readers as an earnest attempt to bring the intensity of traditional shonen battle manga tropes into the relatively quiet, individualistic environment of the golf course.
