Robot Son Goku + Toppi's Travelogue

Robot Son Goku, published in the 1960s, emerged from the creative output of Maetani Koremitsu during the early era of manga adaptation of the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. This specific volume serves as a curious example of mid-century Japanese children's literature that reimagined traditional mythological figures through the lens of the burgeoning fascination with robotics and technology.

The accompanying Toppi's Travelogue reflects the whimsical, adventure-focused storytelling style prevalent in the Kodansha publications of the period. Maetani Koremitsu utilized these narratives to bridge the gap between folklore and modern scientific aspiration, creating a visual aesthetic that leaned heavily on rounded, accessible character designs intended to appeal to young readers of the post-war Showa era.
