Where it came from
Rock in Soul is a manga series authored by Memeno Kei, originating from the broader tradition of musical-themed seinen manga. It was produced to capture the raw, gritty atmosphere of local underground music scenes, focusing on the tension between artistic integrity and the commercial pressures of the entertainment industry. The work is noted for its expressive, high-contrast illustration style, which mirrors the volatile nature of the characters' lives.
The series design draws heavily from late 20th-century alternative rock aesthetics, blending detailed character studies with kinetic performance panels. Upon its release, the work was received as a niche but poignant exploration of creative burnout and resilience, garnering a dedicated following among readers who appreciated its grounded portrayal of band dynamics and the often unglamorous reality of pursuing a professional musical career.
