Romance Sonata

Romance Sonata emerged from the prolific career of South Korean manhwa artist Kim Young-hee, known for her contributions to the shoujo-inspired aesthetic that defined much of the local comics market in the late 20th century. Produced during a period when domestic manhwa was evolving to compete with an influx of Japanese manga, the series sought to capture the intense emotional resonance and atmospheric storytelling favored by young adult readers of the era.

The visual language of the work is characterized by Kim’s hallmark delicate line work and focus on evocative, high-contrast character design. These stylistic choices were intentional efforts to heighten the melodrama and romantic tension central to the plot. While the series maintains a niche status within international markets, it remains a notable example of the stylistic transition in Korean graphic literature toward highly stylized, interior-focused romantic narratives.
