Rudin, A Novel

First published in 1856 in the Russian literary journal The Contemporary, Rudin was Ivan Turgenev's debut novel. The work emerged from the intellectual ferment of mid-19th-century Russia, capturing the disillusionment of the idealistic 'superfluous man' figure. Turgenev intended the protagonist, Dmitri Rudin, to serve as a nuanced portrait of the high-minded but ultimately paralyzed intelligentsia of the 1840s, a generation deeply influenced by German philosophy yet unable to enact social change.

The character of Rudin was famously inspired by Mikhail Bakunin, a real-life contemporary of Turgenev known for his eloquent rhetoric and revolutionary fervor. Upon its release, the novel was met with both critical acclaim and intense scrutiny; while some readers saw it as a biting satire of the era's liberal thinkers, others admired Turgenev’s objective, psychological realism. Its enduring legacy lies in its balanced portrayal of human idealism, marking a pivotal moment in the transition toward the great psychological novels of the Russian tradition.
