RWBY: Ice Queendom emerged as a collaborative project between Rooster Teeth and the Japanese animation studio Shaft, released in 2022. It serves as a creative reimagining of the original American web series RWBY, transposing the narrative into an anime format that explores a dream-based alternate reality known as the Nightmare Realm. The project was initiated to expand the franchise's global footprint, utilizing the distinct aesthetic style of Shaft, known for their work on series such as Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

The character designs were handled by Huke, an artist celebrated for his work on Black Rock Shooter, who aimed to bring a refined, high-contrast aesthetic to the established RWBY archetypes.
