Saenai Kanojo (Heroine) no Sodatekata

Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata, often referred to as Saekano, originated as a light novel series written by Fumiaki Maruto and illustrated by Kurehito Misaki. First published in 2012 by Fujimi Shobo under their Fantasia Bunko imprint, the series was conceived as a meta-commentary on the medium of light novels and visual novels themselves. Maruto, already established as a veteran visual novel scenario writer, crafted a narrative focused on the creation of a 'galge' or dating simulation game, exploring the collaborative dynamics and interpersonal tensions of a young creative circle.

The series is defined largely by Kurehito Misaki’s distinct, highly detailed character designs, which became central to the franchise's identity. Misaki’s work, particularly his illustrations of the protagonist Megumi Kato, was widely praised for its precision and aesthetic appeal, significantly contributing to the series' popularity. The light novels paved the way for a successful multi-media franchise, including two anime television series produced by A-1 Pictures, which cemented the property's status within the romantic comedy and otaku-culture genres.
