Sailor Zombie originated as an arcade shooter game developed by Bandai Namco in 2014, notable for its unique premise that combined the conventions of Japanese idol culture with a zombie outbreak. Directed by the acclaimed filmmaker Inudou Isshin, the project served as an extension of his interest in blending genre fiction with the aesthetics of pop music. The game gained significant attention for its integration of AKB48 members, who were digitally recreated as characters that players had to save through rhythm-based combat.

The subsequent tie-in media, including a television drama and supplemental print volumes, were designed to capitalize on the surreal juxtaposition of school uniforms and horror tropes.
