Saint Seiya: Episode G began serialization in Akita Shoten’s Champion RED magazine in 2002. As a prequel to Masami Kurumada’s iconic 1980s manga series, it was designed to expand the franchise’s universe by focusing on the Gold Saints, the elite protectors of Athena, during their youth. While Kurumada provided the original concept and oversaw the project, the art and writing were handled by Megumu Okada.
Megumu Okada’s artistic approach for Episode G was a significant departure from Kurumada’s classic, simplified style. Okada introduced an intricate, highly detailed aesthetic characterized by heavy shading, stylized anatomical proportions, and an abundance of metallic textures on the Saints' armor, or Cloths.
